Obviously, as the blog for a casual dating website that promotes, safe, casual dating and sex, we are rather open about sexuality. I mean, come on, half the posts on the front page right now have at least SOME reference to knockin’ boots. Also, we 100% agree that sex in art can be a powerful way to show that sexuality isn’t gross, or something to hide, or a part of your life to be ashamed of: especially when it comes to women. Pornography in our time, we agree, seems to promote the idea that women should be virginal looking, and their vaginas should as well: hairless, pink, and as often as possible, not zoomed in on. So as more progressive artists and porn directors decide to cast women with different, more natural looking nether regions, we’re glad that (hopefully) we as a culture will come to accept women’s sexuality as something to embrace, not be embarrassed by.<\/p>\n
THAT BEING SAID, I feel like people are getting a LITTLE CARRIED AWAY. I mean, chicks are getting their own vaginas tattooed on their backs<\/a> and modern art museums have giant plaster cast displays of vajays<\/a> all over their walls. And it’s not to say that I think it’s gross, I just think, in a phrase most often used for men – KEEP IN IN YOUR PANTS, LADIES. Over at Jezebel<\/a>, blogger and porn star Jiz Lee discusses a new book called “I’ll Show You Mine” which is – you guessed it – page after page of MACRO SHOTS of vaginas, photographed by Katie Huisman and edited by Wrenna Robertson. It sells for 30 bucks, but the authors offer to send it out to “women’s, men’s, teen and family resource centres; all types of physician’s offices; STD and sexual health clinics; religious and spiritual centres; and wellness centres… K-12 school counselors and college\/university counseling and sexual resource centers” free of charge.<\/p>\n I mean, that’s great and all… we should<\/em> be teaching teen girls that they are all beautiful and they have nothing to be ashamed of, and hopefully that will lead them to being more open about sex and maybe we can finally take “16 and Pregnant” off the air. HOWEVER, other than those places – the resource centers and sexual health clinics, WHO ELSE NEEDS THIS BOOK? What are you going to do with a giant book of VAGINAS? Coffee table book? “Oh that? Feel free to browse, page 35 is my FAVE. Dinner should be ready in 30!”<\/em> I don’t know, perhaps I’m a little more prudish than I thought, but I almost think that being too over-the-top and in-your-face about sexuality is almost as bad as hiding it from the world.<\/p>\n Perhaps we need to actually read the book before we make a judgment call, but my first impression of “I’ll Show You Mine” is the response I’d have if someone walked up to me on the street and said the title: “Um, nah. I think I’ll pass for now.”<\/p>\n What do you think? Would you buy “I’ll Show You Mine”?
