According to Match.com (who, admittedly) has a different clientele than Club OBC, January 2nd tends to see the biggest spike in dating site memberships, with a 55% increase in usage on January 2nd, 2012 (OkCupid and HowAboutWe reported spikes as well). They wondered what might cause such an influx, so they handed their members a poll to see what the holidays and the New Year might do to single folk. Their findings were prettay…prettay… prettay interesting<\/a> (sorry, I’ve been watching too much Curb Your Enthusiasm<\/i> recently).<\/p>\n

My reaction to each of those stats is, respectively, yikes, rude, eh, and WTF YOU JERK<\/b>. I mean, I suppose the holidays with all their sappy songs and hugging and candles could make one feel more romantic, but they’re also stressful which could cause a breakup. And although super jerk-y, some people don’t want to go through a breakup during the holidays. The problem we have most is with peoples’ “resolutions” to “FIND LOVE.” We have five words for everyone who wrote “find love” on their resolution list just behind “lose weight” and “become famous.”<\/p>\n

IT. DOESN’T. WORK. THAT. WAY.<\/b><\/p>\n

As we’ve found with our countless testiMOANials<\/a>, people are way more likely to find a solid relationship when they aren’t looking for it. Going “hunting” for a mate is a terrible idea, because you’re more likely to put up a front, be less honest (both to yourself and others), and set your standards wither too high or too low, leading to unhealthy relationships with with someone you don’t really like (and who probably doesn’t like the real you). <\/p>\n

Instead, we recommend that people’s resolution should be to “go into dating in 2013 with an open mind – willing to try new things, meet new people, have fun, and keep the pressure low.” Maybe you’ll meet the love of your life this year and maybe you won’t… but either way, you’ll definitely have fun!<\/p>\n
