These five S\u2019s are a key part of tourism in the Canary Islands, a Spanish archipelago west of Morocco. Unfortunately, what\u2019s fun for humans can be bad for wildlife.<\/p><p>Our\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S0301479721019939?via%3Dihub\">new research<\/a>, released yesterday, found public sex \u2013 known as \u201ccruising\u201d \u2013 in the Canary Islands is leading to significant degradation of the Dunes of Maspalomas, one of Europe\u2019s last naturally functioning\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/scitable\/knowledge\/library\/coastal-dunes-geomorphology-25822000\/\">transgressive dune fields<\/a>\u00a0(in other words, they move around).<\/p><p>These semi-vegetated and mobile dunes are one of the most popular sightseeing spots on Gran Canaria island, and are legally protected as a nature reserve. Unfortunately, they are being loved to death.<\/p><p>We studied almost 300 sex spots across the vegetated section of these dunes, <strong>and found damage to 10 plant species, including three endemic to dune areas.<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Oh man, so your beach bound booty with a rando could be causing harm to the planet? Yikes!
