The last two years have certainly proved the worth of social media. Staying connected to friends and family in an age where face to face interaction was impossible is crucial, along with laughing hysterically at memes and random TikTok trends. But it might have a pretty significant downside, too: stunting our sex lives! Via SheKnows, who talked to a sex and relationships expert Erika Miley :<\/p>\n\n\n\n

  1. It sucks up your time: <\/strong>Studies suggest that\u00a0we spend 135 minutes per day on social media<\/a>\u00a0on average, which is up from 126 daily minutes in 2016. That\u2019s almost two hours each day that could have been spent more intimately, both physically and communicatively.<\/li>
  2. Comparing yourself to others on social media can ruin your self-confidence:<\/strong> Research on the social comparison theory has suggested that\u00a0comparison is the thief of joy<\/a>\u00a0time and time again. One analysis\u00a0found a link between depression and rumination\u00a0<\/a>\u2014 the practice of mulling over online experiences, even long after we\u2019ve logged off. For women in particular, just 10 minutes of ruminating on others\u2019 images on Facebook can have us\u00a0spiraling into self-loathing moods.<\/li>
  3. If you’re in a LTR, it can tempt you to cheat: <\/strong>\u201cMany versions of relationships have ended in front of me and the first thing they have said is, \u2018Well, all you do is talk to\u00a0so-and-so<\/em>\u00a0on messenger,\u2019\u00a0or \u2018I found your Grindr profile but we agreed we\u2019re only seeing each other,\u2019\u201d says Miley. \u201cSocial media gives us a false sense of\u00a0anonymity\u00a0and distance from our humanness because of its numbing effects.\u201d<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n

    So if you’re looking for a 2022 resolution with multiple benefits – consider ditching the ‘Gram, FB, or TikTok (or just use them less — though easier said than done). <\/p>\n\n
