“Plenty of people think that hookups \u201cjust happen.\u201d But Darnell said it\u2019s useful to make a point of\u00a0discussing your turn-ons<\/a>\u00a0and expectations with your potential partner. Talking about these things outside of the bedroom and well in advance of your actual hookup helps minimize the risk of confusion, hurt feelings, and violated boundaries.\u00a0“<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Set the mood before sex<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

“Be aware of\u2014and do your best to create\u2014the right mood for making your move. According to Deerhart, this is all about engaging your and your partner\u2019s senses. You may want to dim the lights in the room, light some candles, and put on a\u00a0sexy playlist<\/a>. It\u2019s also a good idea to take your laptop off your bed and put your phone on silent so they don\u2019t distract you or your partner before you even get down to it.\u00a0“<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Read your partner\u2019s body language<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

“Darnell advised paying attention to body language, which can give you both\u00a0go<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0stop<\/em>\u00a0signals that your partner isn\u2019t verbalizing.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Smiling, leaning in, eye contact, and mirroring can all be signs of attraction, but you should also pay attention to clues that your potential partner is uncomfortable and uninterested, like not making eye contact or turning their body away.\u00a0“<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Be direct and appreciative when you make a move\u2014and never pressure your partner<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

“When initiating sex, a lot of people are concerned about crossing boundaries and pressuring people into things they may not want to do. Those are good concerns to have, said Deerhart, but they shouldn\u2019t come at the expense of making your intentions clear. \u201cWe need to be direct,\u201d said Deerhart.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He suggested leading with honesty and telling your partner how they make you feel. For example, you can say something like, \u201cI\u2019m feeling really excited about being with you right now. I want to show that to you physically, and I wonder how that lands with you.\u201d\u00a0‘<\/p>\n\n\n\n
