Okay, dating in 2026 is already chaotic enough without having to wonder if your match actually has a pulse, right? Well, get this: according to a new report from Anthropic, there’s a whole network of dating apps out there run by a China-based studio that is literally swarming with AI personas posing as humans.
We’re talking full-blown “AI-fishing.”
Anthropic (the company behind the Claude AI model) found over 20 dating app variants targeting US users, and get this—about 75% of the profiles were completely AI generated. The apps hook you in with an actual human for a quick, 2-minute video call (they hire gig workers specifically for this!), and then boom: the video cuts out, and you’re suddenly messaging a bot that's engineered to keep you chatting... and paying per message.
It’s giving major Black Mirror energy. The AI models are told to never break character, never admit they are automated, and perfectly mimic your interests based on the info in your profile. It's the ultimate trap for the lonely heart. So, how do you know if that cute match you’re talking to is an actual person or just a very chatty line of code trying to drain your wallet?
Here are three quick tips to spot if you're being AI-fished:
- They're literally too perfect. Does your match text you back within 30 seconds, 24/7? Do they miraculously agree with every single one of your hyper-specific niche interests? It might feel nice for a second, but actual humans have jobs, sleep schedules, and differing opinions. If they never disagree with you, it's a red flag.
- The "Let's just stay on this app" excuse. If you ask to move the convo to Instagram, TikTok, iMessage, or literally anywhere else and they hit you with the "I'm just more comfortable here" line every time? You probably have a bot-problem.
- The eternal dodge on video calls (after the first one). If you get one weirdly brief, 2-minute video call where they say "you're so lucky to get me," and then they absolutely refuse to FaceTime or meet up ever again, you're probably talking to the algorithm now.
Dating is about finding a real, messy, human connection. If it feels like you're talking to a customer service chatbot that learned how to flirt, you probably are. Protect your peace (and your wallet), by joining OBC, where a human being reviews every profile to check for catfish, foreign scammers, and yes - AI.
